A Milford Haven man has pleaded guilty to a driving offence.
Forty-seven-year-old Jason Cooper, of Howarth Close, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Monday charged with riding his Yamaha motorbike whilst failing to comply with the solid white line markings.
The incident occurred on June 9, when the defendant overtook two cars on the approach to the Hakin Road traffic lights at Haverfordwest where the road has two solid white lines divided by hatch markings.
Prosecutor, Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that a police officer was making observations by the railway bridge when he heard a loud engine.
The officer then saw the defendant overtake two cars on the approach to traffic lights on the A4076 and followed him along the bypass.
Mr. Cooper pulled over on his motorbike and was spoken to by the police officer.
When asked why he had overtaken the cars, the defendant said “I wanted to make sure I got through the traffic lights.”
Mr. Pritchard-Jones added that the defendant thought he was filtering through traffic when he wasn’t, explaining that he would only be allowed to if it was moving at 10 mph.
However, because of the solid white line, this is not allowed under the highway code the court heard.
Mr. Cooper, who was not represented, told the court that he had read somewhere on the internet that he was allowed to overtake traffic on a solid white line and filter through traffic when it was moving at 10 mph.
However, this was dismissed by the prosecution as Mr. Pritchard-Jones said this only related to agricultural or any other vehicles when they were going slowly.
The prosecutor also told the court that the traffic was moving at 30 mph, so the defendant must have been speeding.
The defendant did however admit that he had learnt something from the highway code.
Magistrates fined Mr. Cooper £108 for the offence, and ordered him to pay £300 in prosecution costs along and a £30 victim surcharge.
He was also given three points on his licence.
