An elderly motorist who pranged his car on his way to church one Sunday evening, has admitted a drink-drive charge in court.
Sixty-eight-year-old Ernest Webber of Woodbine Way, Hakin, Milford Haven, admitted a charge of driving his vehicle after exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol, when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Dennis Davies told the court that police were called shortly after 6 pm on Sunday, December 2 of last year to the scene of a road traffic collision at Woodbine Way.
“Mr. Webber’s Seat Arosa had collided with a parked vehicle. A breath test proved positive, and he was taken to the police station.
“A blood test came back to show that Mr. Webber had 142 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, so we was well over the limit.
“He told police officers when interviewed that he’d had a vodka earlier before he went on his way to church. He said that he didn’t feel that he was drunk,” added Mr. Davies.
Defence solicitor Mike Kelleher told the court that Mr. Webber had heard a click and realised he had collided with a parked vehicle.
“He had hardly gone any distance at all as it happened very close to his house. Mr. Webber has surrendered his driving licence to the DVLA already, and says that he doesn’t wish to drive again,” he added.
Magistrates told Mr. Webber that it was ‘obviously a very silly thing to do’ before handing him an 18 month driving disqualification and fining him £235 for the offence.
He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
Mr. Webber apologised to the court, telling them he was very sorry for what happened.
