Despite the harsh travelling weather conditions on Thursday evening, January 31, 22 determined members were thrilled to hear member Gill MacKay’s interesting talk. Gill has attained many accolades and awards for her photography.
Gill displayed a wide range of her Ironman prints which had been exhibited in Tenby Museum last year. This was an excellent way to illustrate how to tackle photographing this special event. Gill talked about her camera and lens equipment, timings to get a good location for the various disciplines, camera settings and clothing to wear. Be prepared to get wet when capturing the swim!
We were advised how to do panning, a technique for capturing the cyclists swiftly passing by. Gill bought the day to life from the dawn start with the swim to the late evening finishing line for the tenacious entrants.
After a break, Gill then turned her attention to one of her specialities, street photography. On her travels at home and abroad she will take time to find interesting or unusual locations to photograph ordinary people going about their lives. Gill gave many helpful tips about how to be discreet, trying to blend in. Also discussed was what to look for as a subject, looking for emotion or a story and to think about light and atmosphere.
We warmly thanked Gill for her inspiring words and having the chance to see more of her stunning images. Time to practice everyone !
