PEMBROKSHIRE junior chess club had a fantastic evening when they travelled to the White Knights of Llanelli.
The club journeyed to the Carmarthenshire town on Wednesday, February 18 for a return match following the visit from the White Knights at the end of last year. A thank you goes to Jason Garcia for organising the tournament and for the warm welcome.
Thanks also go to all the parents for driving and taking passengers, especially Fiona, who had a flat tyre so understandably arrived a little late. Da iawn for such dedication!
Pembrokeshire took nine players with them, with White Knights rotating some of theirs, with 13 present on the night. It’s not all about winning at this age but learning and enjoying the game is paramount. There was some amazing play by both sides, showing great technique and understanding for their age.
Special mention goes to Sebastian with a 100 per cent record on the night and Ethan who was also undefeated. A mention also of Steff making his debut - Steff is the grandson of the Late Bev Palmer who ran the original Haverfordwest Chess Club for many years back in the day.
Pembrokeshire Chess club was formerly Haverfordwest Chess Club before it relocated to Steynton and can trace its roots back to May 1966. Good wins for Steff and Henry – in fact, there were notable victories for most of the players.
It was also pleasing to see the Director of Junior Chess in Wales, Ian Eustis, coming to watch the games. He was impressed by the standard of play of both teams.
If any adults or juniors are interested in playing, they are invited to message the Pembrokeshire Chess Club Facebook page.
