As a volunteer with the Royal Marines Cadets, Milford Haven Detachment, Sgt Claire Hewer embraces every chance to learn new skills, test her resilience, and lead by example.
Her role goes beyond personal achievement. Supporting young cadets through their own journeys, she helps them build confidence, develop teamwork, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had. Whether it’s conquering fear on an obstacle course or learning the value of discipline and perseverance, she is there to guide, encourage, and celebrate their successes.
“Every time I face something difficult, I come out stronger,” she said, “and that’s exactly what I want to show the younger cadets. If I can do it, so can they.”

Sgt Hewer added “I have no military experience or background, at times it’s new to me as it is with the cadets, but with the support of the other volunteers around me we learn and teach together further building a stronger cadet unit.”
“The photographs capture not just the grit of a challenge I faced at the yearly Summer Camp, but also the joy and pride that comes with overcoming my dislike for heights.

“Watching cadets push past their limits and realise what they’re capable of is the best reward,” she said. “We grow together – and that’s what makes it so worthwhile.”
Claire’s journey as a Royal Marines Cadet Sergeant proves that with determination, courage, and teamwork, no wall is too high to climb.
