A celebration of children’s author Roald Dahl in his centenary year could see a nine-foot ‘Big Friendly Giant’ walking through Tenby, and ‘Twits’ arguing in the streets!

2016 marks 100 years since the storyteller’s birth in Cardiff, and an amateur dramatics group based in Pembroke, the ‘Eastend Flyover Company’, are hoping to bring some of the festivities to Tenby where the author regularly visited.

“Our own production would celebrate Dahl’s links to Tenby, the town having been a holiday spot for him during his childhood years,” wrote chairman of the company, Angharad Scourfield, in a letter that came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday.

“The central theme of the piece would be his famous story ‘The BFG’ and would involve the creation of a nine-foot puppet to meander through the streets of Tenby, followed by an audience,” she continued.

“They would watch as our BFG stops at buildings of historical significance and blows a dream in through the window. These ‘dreams’ would then be performed either through storytelling, projected animation or live performance,” explained Miss Scourfield.

The proposed production could be staged for three nights in September, with the intention for the play to start in the De Valence Pavilion, with the audience being invited to make their own dream jars that they can take home to keep as a reminder of the day itself, but also use as part of the performance as they follow the BFG through Tenby.

In addition, cast who are not involved in the performance at that particular time will be wandering the streets as Dahl characters - where you could see Fantastic Mr. Fox leaving Tenby Bookshop, Charlie and Grandpa Jo outside Lollies, or even the Twits having a row in Sergeant’s Lane!

The organisers are hoping that the town may become involved, too, with shopkeepers dressing windows to a Roald Dahl theme.

When the performance is finished, the audience will be invited back to the De Valence where there will be a themed festival with storytelling, music, writing workshops, and more.

Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas said that she would really like to support this idea, as it would be wonderful for the town.

Councillors agreed to invite the amateur dramatics group to a future meeting to discuss the proposals further.
