Steven Baxter has been found guilty of murdering a neighbour on the Grove caravan park in Pendine.
But his friend Jeffrey Stephen Ward was cleared unanimously by a jury at Swansea crown court following a three week trial.
Baxter, 52, will be sentenced tomorrow (Tuesday) alongside Julie Harris--Ward’s girlfriend at the time--who has already admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice by driving the men away from the scene following the fatal stabbing.
Baxter was convicted by a majority of 11 to one and showed no reaction his conviction.
The judge, Mr Justice Picken, told Baxter only that he would be sentenced tomorrow and that he would make his remarks then.
The jury had heard how Simon Peter Clark, a 54 year old father of three, had been involved in confrontations with both defendants on September 27 last year--but the jury decided they were separate incidents.
The prosecution had alleged they had attacked Mr Clark together but the jury rejected that.
Ward, 41, had argued and then fought with Mr Clark after being accused of acting inappropriately to his, Mr Clark’s, girlfriend.
Ward told the jury that after that confrontation he returned to his caravan and did not see what happened next.
Baxter claimed Mr Clark remained in a temper and that he was afraid to leave his caravan to secure a gate for the night without arming himself with a knife he used on fishing trips.
He claimed he was a victim of an attack by Mr Clark and accidentally stabbed him through his heart as he defended himself.
Baxter said Mr Clark had been trying to hit him with a metal bar.
"He was still ranting about Jeff. I asked him what his problem was and whether he wanted a smoke.
"I asked him if he was all right and he said "fuck it, you’re having some as well.
"By then he was holding two bars. He went to stab me in my face. I went to protect myself and a bar stuck in my arm. He tried to hit me with a longer bar but knocked the knife onto me, cutting my head.
"I hit out, a sort of reflex, and I felt the knife hit him. He grunted. I thought I had got him in the upper arm but, obviously, now, it was his chest.
"I was in fear of my life. He was trying to stab me with the bars and if he caught me in the eye he would have killed me. It was very quick, ten or twelve seconds if that," said Baxter.
He agreed that he and Ward had then gone on the run, and stayed at various addresses across south and west Wales before separating.
Ward was arrested in St Clears but Baxter was not caught for a month after staying in a tent and then a cave and living off seaweed and mussels.
He was eventually arrested on Marros beach, not far from the caravan park.
Baxter, who has a record for violence, had said he had known Mr Clark for four years and thought him to be a good friend. So much so that he bought his caravan for him and Mr Clark was paying him back monthly.
He also knew Ward well and said "we all got on well."
But that changed on September 27 when Mr Clark accused Ward of "disrespecting" his partner.
