A Milford motorist found asleep in his car by police officers has been banned from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle for 16 months after admitting a drink-drive offence in court.

Twenty-six-year-old Andrew Raymond Mathias, of Skomer Drive, pleaded guilty to driving his vehicle after exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol when he appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court that police received information about a possible drink-driver on July 7, and at around 6 am that day discovered Mr. Mathias sleeping in his VW Golf by the roadside on Hamilton Terrace.

“Initially the driver refused to give a sample of breath by the roadside when instructed to by officers, but then did comply,” she explained.

After being breathalysed. Mr. Mathias gave a reading of 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Defence solicitor David Elvy told the court that Mr. Mathias had been with his girlfriend and hadn’t intended to drive after drinking, but after the argued he got in his car and drove off to his parents house.

“He was asleep in his car when police arrived. He knows he is going to lose his licence today, and as his job working as a grass cutter involves him travelling to work, he expects that he will not be able to do that job any longer.

“Mr. Mathias lives with his mum, but has two children from a previous relationship, so this will have a further knock-on effect, as he knows that due to his foolishness, his children may lose out, because they may not be able to see their father as they did before, due to him not being able to drive,” added Mr. Elvy.

Magistrates disqualified the defendant from driving for 16 months, and fined him £265 for the offence.

Mr. Mathias was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £32 victim surcharge.
