The Come and Try event on Sunday was well attended. Those that came along enjoyed a sail in two yachts (Aries and Slipstream), followed by a sail in Ospreys and a Scorpion. All participants were eager to come back for more and we hope to see them joining in the regular sailing nights, first as crew, and also taken out on a Wednesday evening while junior training is taking place. Many thanks to all the club members who helped stage the event.
The event ended with a BBQ thanks to Dai.
Club Sailing
Saturday’s race saw eight boats on the water, with five Ospreys competing. The wind was light and shifty, with warm, sunny spells. The first race was a good-size triangular course, with light winds,
Ted and lucas in Best ?Chance made a good start to the race, but so did Peter in the Scorpion. The first beat left the fleet tightly grouped with consistent winds, but as soon as they passed the windward mark, the fleet was split, with the Scorpion and a couple of Ospreys taking a good lead over the back of the fleet. It was just then an uneventful gibe and run towards the leeward mark to complete the lap. Most boats completed four or three laps. The winner of race one was Peter in the Scorpion, followed by Ted in an Osprey, then Mike.
The second race was started after a quick adjustment to the course due to the wind shift. The second race was again won by Peter.
Tuesday was a good evening, with winds above 15kts.?All the gathered sailors were joyful at the prospect of being able to finally trapeze. It was one 45-minute race, with an impressive 10 boats on the water. Pro was Alistar and Ioan Thompson who set an enjoyable course out in Tenby bay. After a general recall start, the Scorpion and Ospreys made good progress upwind and quickly rounded the windward mark, then hoisted kites and flew along the beam to the gibe. There were four laps, with the winner being the Scorpion, followed by Jennifer and then Ted in Best Chance.
Sailing continues tomorrow (Saturday), 5 pm, and Tuesday, 7p m, when we are hoping for the same wind again.
Junior sailing
Another wet and windy Wednesday meant that everyone stayed ashore and caught up on sailing theory, knots and racing ideas.
The conditions the following Wednesday were perfect for all the groups to go on the water. Twenty dinghies and five Ribs put to the water. The beginners have now just about finished their Stage 1, The racing group practised mark rounding and boat handling. Every Wednesday continues to be a good social scene, with parents and youngsters enjoying the evening with the usual BBQ food on offer to finish.
Cruiser racing
Five boats got away last Saturday at 4 pm on a starboard course going out on a starboard reach to a conveniently placed pot buoy. Denny in Heather rounded first, followed closely by Roy in Chiron, Steve in Aries, Blake in Slipstream and then Phil in Accolade.
There followed a beat to windward. Roy and Blake soon tacked back onto port towards the South Bay, with the rest continuing out to sea on a starboard tack. Chiron and Slipstream soon gained the advantage of a favourable tide and a shift in wind direction and rounded North High Cliff well ahead. Fortunately, times were taken at North High Cliff as the wind died away when the boats were approaching the Skers.
Order of finish on corrected time was Chiron, Slipstream, Aries, Heather, Accolade.
Last Friday, three boats started in fairly light winds and rounded two marks in the bay. A fairly chaotic start was followed by a reach to the first mark, with Aries in the lead, then Chiron and Slipstream.
A reach to the second mark was followed by a beat against tide and wind to finish. Steve in Aries maintained his lead, but Blake in Slipstream managed to finish second ahead of Roy in Chiron.
Next race is tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 pm.
