Following their annual general meeting, Trefloyne Golf Club are delighted to announce that the club captain for the 2019 season will be Mr. Simon Arthur.
Simon is a long-term member of Trefloyne Golf Club and currently plays off a handicap of six. He lives in Begelly with his wife Clare and their three children The eldest, 15-year-old Finnan, has followed his father’s example and also plays golf at Trefloyne to a very good standard.
Once elected, captain Simon told members at the AGM that whilst the competitive game of golf had a serious element, it was also important the members were able to enjoy themselves while playing and he wanted to bring back as much of the fun aspect of amateur golf as possible.
As a sportsman for all his adult life, and a previous Dyfed League Golf team captain, he is no stranger to the more competitive elements of the amateur game. Trefloyne Golf Club are in the top division of the Dyfed League, so playing for his club means competing at the very top level of amateur golf in the area, something he always looks forward to.
In 2019, Trefloyne will be locking horns with the newly-promoted team of Machynys Golf Club, as well as old rivals Carmarthen GC, Glynhir GC, Haverfordwest GC and last year’s division one champions Milford Haven GC.
Simon was also an integral part of the Trefloyne team that were crowned champions of the Dyfed League back in 2015 and the team, despite many changes, have remained at the top table since, but he recognises the importance of growing the game and providing a platform for its sustainability by encouraging new players into the league set-up.
Simon knows what attracted him to the game initially and making golf enjoyable and fun were high on the list of keeping him interested in the formative years of his golfing career. The rise of interest in other sports in Wales, such as cycling, means that to prosper golf must be attractive to new members to take it up as their hobby. Bringing back some of the fun elements is critical to attracting our younger members and helping to increase overall participation.
Trefloyne Golf Club may not be the biggest in terms of the number of golfers who are members there, but what they lack in numbers, they make up for in team spirit and togetherness, something which bodes well for the coming years.
Simon paid tribute to many special friends who, over the last years, have shown him how captains can make a difference to the club and have given him the knowledge, understanding and confidence to be able to take over the role with that degree of certainty about what he wants to achieve and how to go about it.
As a great believer in the power of teamwork, Simon has created a small but practically-minded team of players from all aspects of the club to help him deliver on his goals. Supported by his new vice club captain, John Voysey, and seven other club members, he is confident that when his turn comes to hand over the captaincy reins, he will have left the role stronger and more robust as a result of his tenure.
Vice-captain John Voysey said: “I agreed to take the vice-captain’s role because of Simon, who is the perfect fit for our club captain. Not only is he a great player, he is also a genuine and highly respected person and golfer who reflects the values of the club and will inspire members to get involved and support him. I am really looking forward to our year together.”
Simon finished by wishing all golfers and their families a wonderful Christmas and happy and safe New Year with all his best wishes for 2019.
Trefloyne Golf Club has ambitious plans for the coming years as well as a range of new membership options, encouraging anyone who feels that they would like to play golf on a great course, and with a club that prides itself on its friendly and approachable style, to get in touch. A warm welcome is assured. More details of the future plans for the club will be released in 2019, a year which looks like another great year for this family run club.

Winter Tee Boxes
Work is ongoing to establish a number of forward winter tees for both ladies and gents. Shortly, all par 3s will have new boxes with mats, with a ladies’ tee on the 12th hole, positioned at the bottom of the slope where the existing junior tee is.
Ladies tees: A temporary tee will be placed, for the ladies, on the 13th hole, just forward of the trees on the upper fairway. This will then be a par four, but with no Out of Bounds(for ladies only) to the right of the white markers. Whilst playing from this tee, ladies are reminded that anyone playing the 18th hole will have priority on the 18th fairway and that they must be aware of possible conflict should their tee shots, from the 13th tee, enter onto the 18th fairway. The stroke index will remain the same.
For the duration of the winter months, the ladies tee on the 15th will be moved onto the gents medal tee, making it a par five of 405 yards. Again the stroke index will stay the same.
The final tee box amendment for the ladies is on the fourth hole. A new temporary tee will be built and located some 60 yards forward of the existing tee. It is positioned in the area of rough to the right of the fairway and the hole will be 406 yards in length and a par five. No change to the existing stroke index.
Men’s tees: Tees have already been moved on 17 and 18, to occupy the existing ladies’ tee boxes. In addition, a forward tee has been placed on the fourth dormant ladies tee. The seventh tee will be shortened to a mat placed adjacent to the ladies tee and will be utilised by ladies and gents. This tee will provide some relief to the landing area which is becoming wet during this rainy season.
It is stressed that these tees are for winter use only and that when spring comes, the tees will revert to the full course layout. Should any member have further suggestions or want anymore information, then please contact the Pro Shop
