FORTY seven eager youngsters from across South West Wales came to Trefloyne for the club’s annual Junior Open Day on Spring Bank Holiday Monday.
On a grey and blustery day. they lined up to tee off in a packed array of five competitions… something for everyone.
There were the 18-hole Order of Merit Medals for boys and girls, off white and red tees, and the 18-hole stableford off the yellows.
Then came the nine hole game for improvers off the red tees, and the five-holer off the blues for the youngest entrants
With club captain Eifion Price doing a great job as starter for the day, they were off.
Seventeen boys fought for the Order of Merit Medal, and played some excellent golf, as the scores show.
Heading the table was Harri Atyeo from Haverfordwest, with a net 70… off the whites!
Hard on his heels was Cai Hartnell Jones from Cilgwyn, who carded a very creditable net 76.
Then came the girls’ Order of Merit Medal, where the winner was Sophie Lawrence from Glyn Abbey. Her 86 net just edged out Haverfordwest’s Laci Reynolds, one shot behind.

It was now the turn of the players in the Yellow Tee Stableford, which produced Trefloyne’s first home champion of the day, with Liam Bain scoring a massive 45 points, 9 clear of Osian Wyn Jones from Cilgwyn, whose 36 could easily have won on a different day.
Champing at the bit, the improvers were raring to go in the 9-hole Mixed Stableford, off the reds.
Once again Trefloyne youngsters came into their own, and for a while Kayla Arthur looked like having the best card with her 16 points. In the end though, she was just pipped at the post by Will Morgan’s 17. Two excellent rounds.
The day that had been grey and blustery day was now dark and rainy, but nothing was going to stop our youngest competitors, aged 4—11, playing the 5-hole Mixed Stableford. And the proud winner was Tomos Lloyd Davies, of Carmarthen, with Beau Curtis from Haverfordwest close behind.

They were all out on the course as the rain got heavier and heavier but every single young golfer completed their round, thoroughly drenched by the final putt… but still smiling. And once they’d all dried off, everyone made their way to the Manor for the prize presentation… and for something to eat!
As well as the competition prizes, the longest drive went to Mia Bagagiolo from Glyn Abbey, with Cai Hartnell Jones (Cilgwyn) adding nearest the pin to his success in the medal.
There were long and loud rounds of applause for all the winners, as well as for Junior Organiser Meurig Evans, and all the Trefloyne members who supported the event.

Incidentally, it was a good week for Liam Bain – a week later he not only won the longest drive at Haverfordwest Junior Open but also took the Boys 25–54 Handicap Stableford, with a staggering 49 points! Don’t worry… his handicap has come down about 10 shots.
And third in the same competition was Trefloyne’s Josh Richards, with an excellent 40 points.
