Squalling gales and rain met the 22 stalwart mixed partners on Tenby golf course on Sunday morning, but the strong winds made sure the rain didn’t last long, and we actually saw the sun a few times!
The Usher Cup has been played for in Tenby since 1972 and is a competition everyone would like to win. I noted that Sam Ackerman and a J. Tucker won it in the 1980s; now there’s a name from the past!
Four pairs won their entry fee back in the random draw (done by Tom in the Pro Shop). They were Trevayne Keohane and Tom Watkins, Helen and Chris Hughes, Laura McQueen and David T. Morgan, and Gill Roberts and John Ross.
There were just two 2s recorded. One was on the sixth by Maura Gunning and Jim Moffatt, the other by Laura McQueen and David T. Morgan on the 17th. All of them won a sleeve of balls.
The scores were remarkably good considering the weather, as the wind made it tricky out on the exposed links.
We must also thank the green staff under the guidance of Scott, for the amazing condition of the course. The comments after the Welsh PGA last week should make us all proud to be members of such a super golf course. Well done boys!
A highly commended score came in from Anna and Keith Hubbard on 37, but they were just knocked out of the prizes by the last pair in, with a better back nine, namely Pat Fox and her grandson Philip. They took fourth place.
In third place were Carol and Chris Beecher with 38 points. Trevayne Keohane and Tom Watkins managed 40 points to take second place. But with a super score of 41 points, the 2016 winners of the Usher Cup were Maura Gunning and Jim Moffatt.
The next mixed event is this (Friday) afternoon at 4 pm when (as requested) we are having a Friendly Foursomes over 14 holes, followed by supper at the club; and as asked, you can make up your own pairings. The sheet for this is on the mixed noticeboard on the back wall of the club.
Then next month, on August 14, we have a return of the Morgan Tucker Greensomes Open Mixed competition. It will be on the computer for members to sign in for later this month, but visitors can go on the Tenby website and download the entry form and send it in now to be sure of your place.
Finally, thanks to Tom Hilling in the Pro Shop for his help, to Laura for doing the computer, and to Ollie and Lee for looking after us at the 19th. Great day everyone.
H.K.M.
