Tuesday, September 26, marked the culmination of the Seniors’ Summer season, since all the inter-club matches have been completed. In accordance with tradition, this is also the time for the annual general meeting, the election of new officers, a closing tournament, a raffle and the presentation of contributions to local charities - throw in a spot of lunch and it makes for a pretty full day!

The tournament, in 15-hole Stableford format, attracted 31 competitors. The weather was quite perfect; the course was in splendid condition and the golf was really enjoyed by all - but in particular by Peter Williams, whose 32 points placed him in top spot, almost as much by David Rees, whose 32 points suffered from the countback and dropped him into second slot - ahead of Allen Watts, whose 31 points won him the bronze medal place.

Congratulations to all three players, who were rewarded with much gold by our ever generous treasurer, ‘Seychelles’ Stan Hudson.

Not quite as much gold was donated to the two players who holed their second shots on the par three sixth hole, but Geoff Aston and Allen Watts were nonetheless delighted to be mentioned in dispatches.

The attached photograph shows all the day’s winners - the rest of us just sulked and muttered!

While the cards were being marked and positions determined, the players took advantage of Lee’s culinary exploits in the kitchen and the barmaiding skills of Emma 2 to satisfy the inner man in preparation for the AGM.

Meanwhile, the (for the moment) vice-captain, Idwal David, presented this year’s selected charities with donations raised from the charity raffles held throughout the summer months - this year £1,000 was raised from the generous Seniors and visiting golfers.

The photographs show Idwal with Tony Key, of the Wales Air Ambulance, Bob Storey of Tenby Talking Newspapers, and club captain Neil Thomas, whose chosen charity is Care Leukaemia. For the fourth chosen charity, a cheque was forwarded to the Paul Sartori Foundation, in memory of our recently deceased colleague and friend, Mel Neale.

All the recipients were gracious with their thanks, and the Seniors will doubtless subscribe to the charity raffle with renewed vigour over the Winter Eclectic series.

And so to the AGM, which was slightly marred by the absolutely unavoidable absence of the Seniors outgoing captain, Dudley Williams - who nonetheless submitted an eloquent and comprehensive report, which was read to the meeting by the incoming captain, Idwal David.

Dudley congratulated his Seniors for their performance in the inter-club summer matches; the results were very encouraging: won - 11, lost - 6, halved - 2, abandoned - 1.

I am sure, dear reader, that Idwal is familiar to you all, but just in case, a photograph of our new captain, resplendent in his Seniors’ shirt, is attached. The committee will now consist of; secretary and vice-captain - the current hard-working secretary, Derek Cole. The important and busy position of teasurer will continue to be held by the quietly unflappable Stan Hudson, while Jim Martin soldiers on as competition secretary.

Ooops! I forgot to mention this week’s charity raffle - three bottles of wine on offer with tickets at £1 each - and Rod Clarke, Bob Wiseman and Peter Hart won one each - so that made eight happy winners in one way or another. The remaining 23 continued to sulk and mutter!

So - onwards and upwards. Today (Friday), we have an away day at Derllys Court, Tuesday, October 3, is the date for the first Eclectic competition of the season and -wait for it! - Friday, October 6, is the first Chicken Trot of the season!

See you there!
