Turkey Trotting Month
The first competition of the month was the first Turkey Trot - an 18-hole stableford- held on Sunday, December the 3. Not a great number turned out, but Georgina Ormond had the best score of 32 points and she won a very nice bottle of wine for her efforts. Sarah Waring was second on the day with 29 points, and Fair Ball was third on 28.
On Thursday the 7th there was the second of the Turkey Trots - another 18-hole one - and this saw 14 playing. Half the field managed scores in the 30s and there was one two on the 17th from Denise Edwards - a chip-in with her second shot. In third place was Heather Morgan on 31 points, with Denise getting 34 and winning the box of chocolates for runner-up. In first with a handicap-cutting 37 points was Gill John, who now plays off 26 after her excellent round and who took home the bottle of wine.
On Thursday the 14th there was a 15-hole Turkey Trot contest which 11 people entered. There were a few wintry showers early on, but this didn’t deter any of the players going out. Some found the conditions more testing than others, with Denise Edwards coming third with a respectable 27 points, just behind Sue Ensor in second on 29 to take home a box of chocolates as a reward. In first place was lady captain Pam Cole with 30 points and a bottle of wine as a prize.
The final festive Turkey Trot was on Thursday the 21st - another 15-hole comp that saw a dozen ladies try to get their hands on the wine and choccies. Thankfully it was a dry day; however, the wind picked up to be a tricky south-westerly breeze. There was one two on the day on the 12th for Heather Morgan, which helped her get the first place with a fine 32 points to win the chocolates (her choice). Sue Ensor bagged the runner-up spot on countback from Denise Edwards on 31 points, meaning that Sue got the wine.
After the Turkey Trot prizes were handed out, the draw for the lady captain’s Christmas hampers took place, with Lynda Edwards’s name being drawn out as the winner of the main hamper and Gill John getting to take home the drinks hamper. Both winners were over the moon with their prizes, with Lynda remarking that it’s the first time she’s won anything!
The lady captain would like to thank most sincerely everyone who donated items for the hampers and also those who bought the ‘squares’ to help raise £120 towards her chosen charity - Haverfordwest Samaritans.
The next ladies competition will be January 4, 2018, which will be a 15-hole stableford.
Until then I hope that everyone has had a very good Christmas and I wish you all good health and good golfing for 2108.
