Three Tenby members travelled to Ashburnham on Tuesday, April 3, to take part in the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire Championships, which is a gross medal round in the morning to establish the order for two knockout competitions that afternoon and the following day.

The youngest was Kasumi Tran, who qualified in second place with a gross 78, and then Denise Edwards came seventh with a gross 84, both qualifying for the top eight in the championship matchplay. Just missing out in ninth place was Heather Morgan with a gross 89, who did qualify for the second flight play-off.

After lunch, Denise had drawn Kasumi in the quarter-finals, and Heather had drawn Ann Thomas, of Derllys, in the semi-final of the plate. Denise beat Kasumi on the 20th hole, where Denise sank a birdie to win. Heather also had to wait until the 20th hole to win her semi-final.

Wednesday was a wet start. Denise won her semi-final in the morning on the 17th and Heather was victorious in her final against Janet Jones from Derllys, also winning on the 17th.

The final that afternoon was played in worsening weather, with a strong, cold wind, and that too went to the 17th green, where Denise lost to Sophie Anderson, of Ashburnham, who had had the best gross in the medal round.

In the prize-giving, Denise won the runner-up plate, Kasumi won the best junior gross, and Heather won the 2nd flight trophy. A successful day for Tenby Golf Club Ladies!

The first ladies’ competition in Tenby in April was Thursday 5th, which was the qualifying round of the Australian Spoons Foursomes, in which nine pairs took part.

The top three pairs scored well, with Sue Ensor and Gill John coming third on countback from Linda Tordoff-Evans and Julie Tordoff, both on 37 points, but the outright winners with an impressive 41 points were Bev Owen and Sue Shooter, who will now go on to represent the club later this summer.

On Sunday, April 8, Tenby Ladies had their first round of the Annodata Knockout competition, which was a home draw against Cradoc. The five members of the team were Linda Tordoff-Evans, Carol Beecher, Anna Hubbard, Mary Lewis and Heather Morgan. The score was 2.5-2.5 after the five matches, with Anna managing to win her last four holes to go from four down to secure the important half.

This meant that Heather as the ‘tail-end charlie’ had to play sudden death and she managed to win the 19th to secure victory for the Tenby team. Good luck in round two!

There were two competitions on Thursday 12th, with seven players taking part in the nine-hole comp. The scores at the top were tight, with Izzy Lawrence coming third on 17 points, Anne Wilks was second on 18 points and Pat Fox first with 19 points.

There was a strong field in the 18-hole medal, with 21 entrants. Conditions were favourable and this was reflected in the scores, with the top 11 beating nett 80 and nett 71 only good enough for fourth and fifth places for Rebecca Naden and Anna Hubbard, although they were both cut a shot.

In third place with a fine 68 was Carol Beecher (cut two shots) and the runner-up was Heather Morgan with an excellent 67 and she also had a two-shot cut. With a dream of a round, the best score of the day belonged to Sue Ensor, who managed a stupendous nett 64, which resulted in her receiving a staggering handicap reduction of five shots!

There were four 2s recorded, three of them on the sixth from Carol Beecher, Heather Morgan and Sue Shooter, with Heather also getting a two on the 17th.

On Saturday, Bev Owen and Irene Gilman played their first round match in the Daily Mail Foursomes at home against Trefloyne. Local knowledge was an obvious advantage and the Tenby ladies had a very good win by 7 and 5 and they, too, are wished well in their next round.

There was an R&A Nine Hole Aggregate Pairs competition also held that day, with the top score coming from Linda Tordoff-Evans and Julie Tordoff with 35 points, just ahead of Sue Ensor and Sue Shooter on 33. The best scores from Wales will play at Carnoustie in July.

It has been a good start to the matchplay fixtures, with the next one coming on Sunday when Tenby play Derllys Court at Haverfordwest in the preliminary round of the Welsh Team Championships. Play well ladies!

The club held a taster session for ladies ‘New 2 Golf’ on Monday and it was lovely to meet and chat to 11 extremely keen potential new members. They have already signed up for more lessons with our senior professional Tom Hilling. We look forward to seeing them all back down at the club very soon.

At 2 pm on Sunday, May 13, there will be a Fashion Show at the Golf Club organised by members of the Tenby Ladies section in aid of The Samaritans, Haverfordwest - the chosen charity of the ladies captain, Pam Cole.

There will be an opportunity to purchase discounted clothes from M&Co and golf/sportswear, which can often double as holiday casual clothing. During the interval there will be refreshments (prosecco, afternoon tea with sandwiches etc) and the tickets are only £12 - contact Tenby Golf Club if you would like to attend.

Please come and support this worthy charity, have a fun afternoon out and grab yourself a bargain at the same time.
