September’s meeting of the Kilgetty Golf Society featured the delightful Glyn Abbey course that several of our members had not played before. Apart from the greens, which are still recovering from this summer’s drought, the course was in good condition and we visited on a beautiful autumn day. Add to that mix some good beer, excellent grub and some high scoring, made for a really good day out.

Setting a scorching pace off the first tee were Kevin Dyer Straits, Peter Pulao Rice and Steve Gizmo Jones. 108 points - an average of 36! Wow! Obviously, conditions were very favourable for high scoring. Would this be topped?

Well, in blissful ignorance of the first group’s score, Roger Analyst Handcock, Mike Slippery Skidmore and Barry Nippy Neale thought they had cracked it. They were however to be disappointed when it was revealed that they had only 104 points. Nippy belied his nickname by ending the round by falling into a ditch and not being nippy enough to stop his runaway trolley from careering into another ditch, all in full view of the amused gallery on the 18th.

More (or less) was to come as Perry Bonzo Phillips, Wynne Andy Capp Richards and John Hamster Hammond took to the fairways. I shan’t say why they only had a low score of 77, but the Wooden Spoon award may tell a story. On the bright side, Bonzo’s effort saw him gain the lead by one point in the individuals’ Annual Race for honours.

Bringing up the rear were Graham Victor Longster, Joel Lofty Braithwaite, and Ben Bison Risley, who was delighted by his new nickname. Quite a performance with Lofty excelling on a course he had never played before, and lifting his partners to, on another day, a good team score of 100.

So Straits, Pulao and Gizmo took the team award. The other prizes were:

1. Lofty – an amazing 44 points, and a cut of three in his handicap. There was much muttering it should be more.

2. Gizmo - 42 points, accompanied by even more muttering. A two-shot cut.

3. Slippery - 35 points, on a better back nine from the Analyst who won the 20-plus handicap prize. Both cut a shot.

The rest of the prizes went to Lofty. Well almost. He won the longest drive, was the only player with a two, and, to add insult to injury, his raffle ticket came out first in the draw! Perhaps we should change his nickname to Lucky!

The only other winner was Andy Capp who claimed the Wooden Spoon and a sleeve of balls. He must have thrown the cap in, but only after he got closest to the pin on the eighth and missed the putt for a two!

Another successful outing for the society, albeit denuded this month by the absence of many regular players. Our next trip is our annual two-dayer. This year to Bransford Golf Club near Worcester on October 14 and 15.
