Members of Tenby and Trefloyne Golf Clubs took part in the AJO Memorial over the past two Saturdays. The popular event is held in memory of the late Arthur Ormond MBE, former managing editor of the Tenby Observer.

The first leg was held at Trefloyne on June 11. The maturing parkland course was in an excellent overall condition. It rained during the early part of the morning, but the rest of the day was dry and warm.

In the AJO Bowl, 39 competitors scored 30 points or more. Five came in with 36 points - Billy Truman, Richard Cope and Gavin Scotcher, of Trefloyne, plus Allen Watts and Jon Bolter, of Tenby.

However, the joint leaders at the halfway stage were Tenby’s Rees Davies and Trefloyne’s Randal Day, both scoring a very creditable 37 points.

At Tenby on June 18, the weather was glorious, the links were running fast and players had to contend with a stiff cross breeze. Davies managed 32 points, but Day faded out of contention with just 22 points.

Six entrants carded 36 points - Tenby’s Neil Webb, Nick Thomas, Allan Morton and Paul Dennehy, plus brothers Richard and Nick Cope, of Trefloyne. The Tenby trio of Viv John, John Stenson and Charles Dredge were one better with 37 points.

Three one handicappers, John Morris and Richard Morton, of Tenby, and Trefloyne’s Scotcher all had fabulous rounds of 71, i.e. one under par for 38 points.

However, Lewis Hurlow, of Tenby, enjoyed the round of his life. Playing off seven, a gross 73 gave him 42 points - 21 out and 21 back.

Thus, the 36-hole aggregate for the AJO Bowl saw Tenby’s Hurlow and John in joint fifth place with 70 points. Trefloyne’s Nick Cope and Tenby’s Richard Morton both totalled 71 points, but the latter claimed the third prize by virtue of a better second round.

The consistent Richard Cope was runner-up with 72 points, but the deserved 2016 winner with a magnificent 74 points was Scotcher. Gavin invariably scores well in the AJO Bowl and has finished second on no less than three occasions in the past.

The Tenby Observer Cup is awarded to the competitor with the best ‘gross’ Stableford aggregate. Scores are calculated by deducting the players’ handicaps.

Morris and Morton recorded 67 and 69 points, respectively. Nevertheless, Scotcher was a clear winner with 72 points and consequently won both the gross and nett events. This is a rare and fine achievement, especially considering the size and quality of the field.

The lady members of both clubs compete for the Ladies AJO Bowl. In the first leg at Trefloyne, Tenby’s Julie Tordoff, Georgina Ormond, Trevayne Keohane and Pam Cole all had 31 points. However, the best two scores were posted by home players, Linda Coward with 33 points and Emma Guerreiro with a fine 35 points.

At Tenby, Linda managed just 23 points and Emma was also below her best with 29 points. Trefloyne’s Beth McMann had 34 points. The excellent 37 points recorded by the Tenby pair of Maura Gunning and Anna Hubbard was not quite good enough. Tenby’s Rosina Jenkins, a former winner of the competition, had the best score of the day with a stunning 38 points.

However, Pam Cole’s consistency ensured that she retained the AJO Ladies Bowl. Her 34 points at Tenby gave her a 36-hole total of 65 points, one better than both Emma and Rosina.

A total of 246 cards were taken out over the two legs. Sheets showing the leading scores of both Trefloyne and Tenby as well as over 36 holes are now displayed in the Club Houses and Pro Shops at both clubs. As usual, those who did well in the first leg will claim their credit/voucher at Trefloyne. Similarly, the second leg prize money will be at Tenby. Competitors can obtain their 36-hole aggregate winnings at their home club.
