The famous links at Tenby were an ideal place to be last Sunday afternoon in beautiful weather. What better way to spend it than playing a mixed golf competition, with a favourite format of greensome foursomes?
Seventy-six people agreed with me! This popular competition opened up to non-members three years ago, and grows in popularity every year. The actual Morgan Tucker Trophy can only be won by a pair of Tenby members, but three visitors’ prizes are also given, so making it a favourite for members and visitors alike.
Nearest the pin in two was won by John and Fair Ball, whilst nearest the pin on the 12th (almost a hole in one!) was Linda Tordoff-Evans.
Nine twos were recorded; Steve Williams and Avrile Rees on the 6th and 17th, Neil Gallagher and Nicky McDowell on the 12th and 17th, then on the 6th Julie Tordoff and Nigel Ayers, Anna and Keith Hubbard, Eileen and Harley Chessell, and on the 17th Dai and Penny Cope.
Visitors’ prizes were given first to Avrile Rees from Carmarthen and Steve Williams from Tenby with a magnificent 45 points; second to Moyanne Monday from St. Pierre and Alan Monday from Tenby with 42 points, and third to Neil Gallagher and Nicky McDowell from St. Pierre with 41 points.
Fourth prize in the members’ competition went to Andy and Diane Williams with 41 points. They were beaten on the back nine, also with 41 points, by Anna and Keith Hubbard. In second place were our lady president Pat Fox and her grandson Philip who was over from Germany. They had a great score of 42 points.
The winners of the trophy for 2017, receiving only for shots and grossing 68 with 43 points, were Holly Watkins and Chris Thompson. Holly has only recently returned to golf and Heather and Mervyn were thrilled that she and Chris won their trophy this year.
Many thanks to our president Allan Morton for presenting the prizes, to all who donated the lovely prizes,, to Mike Fox for starting the visitors, to Laura for doing all the work in the office and helping with the raffle, to Iris and Judy for running the raffle all day, to the caterers for feeding and ‘watering’ us, to the green staff for having worked so hard on the course, but most of all to my husband David, who was a general dog’s body for me all day!
The next mixed at Tenby for members is the 125 Anniversary Greensome Medal on Saturday, September 16.
H.K.M.
