With so many meetings off last weekend due to the dry weather, a huge amount of credit must go to the ground staff at Lydstep racecourse, in particular Paul Williams, for producing safe racing ground, meaning the Tivyside Hunt fixture was never even in doubt.
It was a day to remember for birthday boy Mickey Bowen, who trained four of the seven winners on the card. The first came in the second race of the day, the West Wales Area Conditions race, where Deadly Move and trainer Bowen’s brother James came home half a length winners from Teenage Kicks and Steph Rogers in second. The runner-up didn’t make it easy for the winners, but Deadly Move found plenty under pressure to secure his third win on the bounce. The Bowen brothers striked again in the Timico sponsored Mixed Open with Flying Eagle coming home easy winners of the race, five lengths ahead of runner-up High Hatton.
The first three from the race, which includes Buck Mulligan, have qualified for the Timico Mixed Open final at Cheltenham on May 5. The winner and runner-up have also qualified for the Skinners Ladies Open final at Stratford on June 9.
Mickey and James Bowen also went home winners of the Novice Riders race, with Sir Du Bearn winning the race comfortably. This was the eleven year olds third win on the bounce, just proving what sort of form the family are in. Hold Court and Isobel Williams came home in second. Mickey Bowen also trained the winner of the first Maiden on the card, with African Air and Jodie Hughes winning the race by nine lengths, with Pat Mac and Ben Jones in second. The winner took up the lead after two out, where favourite Milathlete came to grief with an eight length advantage.
Jockey Ben Jones notched up another double on the card, with the last two races going his way. The first of which, Glenteeneasaigh, also won at the course on Easter Monday. The pair came home six length winners of the Restricted, with Gone Platinum and Wayne Maskill back in second. Robin Des People gave Jones his second winner, in the Open Maiden. The pair were left in the lead at the 10th, and drew clear as the race went home. They were easy winners in the end, with Zorro and Connor Orr back in second. The Hunt Race was won by Qalinas and Wayne Maskill, with the strong finishing Sandeel Bay and Jess Prince in second, giving their trainer a one, two in the race.
The next West Wales meeting will be held on the Bank Holiday Monday on May 1, at Llwyn Ddu, for the Banwen Club. First race is at 1.30 pm.
