Community and Habitat are at the very core of the new school curriculum in Wales so Merched y Wawr decided to launch a competition as one of the events for Whitland Town of Culture 2019.

Whitland pupils from Ysgol Llys Hywel and Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Taf were given the theme of ‘Whitland in Words and Pictures’. Cash prizes of £25, £15, £10 and certificates were awarded to the first three in each age category and those highly commended also received a certificate. The adjudicators were Susan Phillips, formerly head of the Welsh department at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, and the artist Eirian Davies, a past pupil of the school.

A reception was organised for the winners in the lovely interpretive gardens at Canolfan Hywel Dda, Whitland. Children were joined by representatives of societies and community groups to see the awards being presented by the adjudicators. The children’s work was so outstanding that the display will continue at Canolfan Hywel Dda until mid August, then move on to be part of a much larger exhibition ‘A Glimpse into Whitland’s Past’, which will be open for one week starting on August 18 at the Memorial Hall, Whitland.

Merched y Wawr are very grateful to the Hoelion Wyth society and the Clwb Gwawr society for contributing towards the prize money.
