Sir,

Over the last weekend, aside from Tenby, there were nationwide official celebrations of the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. At least Canon Grace and St. Mary’s Church offered a garden party on Sunday afternoon and the Mayor put in an appearance in his robes, but where was the ceremonial pageantry from Tenby Town Council.

I realise that Tenby Town Council is a largely impotent talking shop, but we do have a Mayor, mace bearers and a town crier complete with robes of office, which is somewhat unique among holiday resorts.

Surely the council could and should have organised, as a minimum, a parade and a ‘birthday shout’ in Tudor Square. It would have reflected some respect for Her Majesty and provided a spectacle for hundreds of visitors in the town.

To be fair, I concede that the town council did organise a furtive beacon lighting ceremony on the harbour to celebrate Her Majesty’s Birthday in April.

John H. T. Griffiths,

Tenby.
