Irresponsible dog owners in Milford Haven can lay a claim to the most unwanted title in Pembrokeshire.
Recent figures show the vicinity has the highest number of Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN’s) issued for dog fouling in the County.
The statistic, provided by District Enforcement, the company working with Pembrokeshire County Council to crackdown on enviro-crime shows Milford Haven to be the location where most FPN’s for dog fouling have been issued, twelve in total. Gelliswick Beach and Haven Head Retail Park are the worst affected places in the town.
Dog walkers in Pembroke Dock and Tenby are the joint second worst offenders in Pembrokeshire for not cleaning up after their dogs with four FPNs issued in each town across the same period.
Since the partnership with District Enforcement began in September 2018, more FPNs were issued for dog fouling in Pembrokeshire than in total over the previous five years.
Fixed Penalty Notices for environmental offences such as dog fouling, littering, fly-posting and graffiti carry a charge of £150 reduced to £75 for early payment.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Regulatory Services, Councillor Pat Davies says the partnership with District Enforcement is working.
“Nobody likes stepping in dog mess and no-one likes to see it on our streets,” she said.
“Dog faeces is unhygienic, unsightly and can be a hazard to human health, with the risk of it getting on the wheels of pushchairs and wheelchairs as well as people stepping in it.
“It’s only right and fair that we crackdown on irresponsible dog owners in our County and we will continue to do so.
“Receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice for any environmental crime is not a badge of honour. It should be a source of shame.
“We’re determined to try and keep our streets clean and together with District Enforcement, that is what we are striving to do. The clear message to those irresponsible dog owners is clean up after your dog or face a Fixed Penalty Notice or even court.”
