One of Tenby’s Cancer Research Shop volunteers will be doing some ‘self-raising’ for charity again this year by baking 150 Christmas Cakes for a good cause.
Maureen Lower MBE a volunteer at the Tenby shop located at Tudor Square has been making and selling real traditional Christmas cakes to aid various charities for the past 25 years.
Maureen, who lived in Berlin for 42 years, and now resides in Kilgetty, was awarded the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2003 for her volunteering work, and the German Medal of Merit.
The most cakes she has made in one year is 150 cakes using approximately 35kg of flour, 42kg mixed fruit, 360 eggs and 22kg of brown sugar!
“The cakes are bursting with moist fruit, dripping with light brown sugar and butter, generously coated with marzipan and icing, and traditional Christmas decorations, to make it an ideal Christmas present,” said Maureen, who has already started collecting orders for her cakes, with all the proceeds going towards Cancer Research UK.
“Last year I sold out and have already taken 30 orders from regular customers this year. I intend to bake some to take back to Berlin too.
“On Saturday staff and family members at Kilgetty’s Co-op chipped in with me to make and sell cakes from the store, raising a wonderful £213.50 towards the ingredients for the cakes. Morrisons have also donated to the cause which is very kind,” she continued.
You can place your order now (with payment up front to cover the cost of the ingredients) for collection come mid-November.
Cakes come priced at £6.50 for a small size, £10.50 for medium, and £16.50 for large.
Maureen has already begun baking her latest batch of Christmas cakes, but if you would like to order one please pop into the Cancer Research Shop in Tenby or ‘phone them on 01834 845451.
