Sir
I am a resident of Serpentine Road Tenby and am writing to express my concerns regarding the traffic chaos my family and I and neighbours endure on a regular basis
In short, my concern is that the current situation is dangerous and is an ’Accident waiting to happen’
There are two main problems:
1) Cars travel at high speed as a matter of course often accelerating away from the 20mph restriction in Heywood Lane, including during the night when it seems the local Taxi drivers use Serpentine road as a race course to get to their next fare!
In my opinion most cars exceed the 30mph limit on a regular basis with no regard for the safety of other drivers and pedestrians alike (including many children walking to school)
2) During the day non resident’s cars are dumped pretty much wherever they want often blocking or partially blocking driveways
I have on occasion received verbal abuse from drivers, usually mums on the school run, when I have asked them to move so that I can manoeuvre in or out of my driveway!
Tonight (Wednesday) was an excellent example...I returned home from work at 5 pm to find cars parked on both sides of the road at the Heywood Lane end, which effectively left the road as a single lane which made reversing into my drive somewhat interesting with little room to negotiate turning and causing impatient drivers, that had to wait for me, to show their frustration - Charming!!
I understand the junior school had a Christmas play being shown so the cars I assume belonged to parents watching the show.
Having discussed these problems with neighbours I was informed that the local councillor had carried out a door knocking exercise along Serpentine road, to gain an understanding of the impact of the road being used as a ’rat run’ at all times of the day and night.
However, no one has knocked at my door for my opinion and my attempts to contact the local councillor myself, have proven frustratingly impossible
I have today written to Pembrokeshire county council asking what actions they propose to take to ensure how the residents of Serpentine Road are going to be protected from the inconsiderate actions of the school run parents whose children attend the local schools in Heywood Lane, and what proposals are in place to accommodate the increase in volume of traffic and children once the new school opens.
I have also posed the question in how the council intend to deal with the consistent speeding of irresponsible drivers who show on a daily basis a complete disregard for the law but most alarmingly absolute ignorance of their surroundings. I await their response in regards to what traffic calming measures will be introduced before someone is seriously injured or worse even, that the road records a fatality.
It will be interesting to see any response you get to my email as I wonder if the council staff are far too busy deciding what additional charges they can put in place in time to glean more money from unsuspecting tourists and residents alike rather than dealing with the real issues in Tenby.
