The Salvation Army is inviting jobseekers from Carmarthen and the surrounding areas to a drop-in employability event tomorrow, designed to help people take steps toward meaningful work.

The Employability Day event will take place at The Salvation Army, 108–109 Lammas Street, SA31 3AP, on Tuesday, June 23 from 10am to 12 noon. It comes as the church and charity warn that finding work is becoming harder than ever for many people.

Visitors will be able to speak with employability experts, access training and volunteering opportunities, browse live job vacancies, and receive support with submitting applications. It will also include a coffee morning and information sessions about The Salvation Army’s Barista Training course.

Chris Jones, 51, from Llandeilo, was among the first to complete the Barista course and now works part-time at The Salvation Army café on Lammas Street. Through assisted working, Chris, who has severe epilepsy and learning difficulties, works alongside his carer, Karen.

Chris said:

“I love this Barista role. I’m trying to use the experience I’ve had here at The Salvation Army Café to get a job elsewhere and earn some money. I enjoy meeting new people and making them happy by serving them what they enjoy.”

The Salvation Army’s Employment Plus service supports people into sustainable, quality work, particularly those facing barriers such as outdated skills, caring responsibilities, health issues, disability or homelessness.

Abi Gardner, Assistant Regional Manager of Employment Plus in Wales, said:

“Across Wales, we are seeing fewer entry-level opportunities and longer job queues. This means many people who are not yet ‘job ready’ risk being left behind.

“We support people who are often excluded from traditional services and who may need additional help before they are ready to apply for work.

“Our event on 23 June gives jobseekers, especially those who have been out of the labour market for some time, the chance to come and find out how we can support them on their journey to meaningful employment.”

Around 3,000 people in the local area were claiming unemployment-related benefits on average in 2025(1). While this is the main route through which the government provides employment support, it does not capture everyone who is out of work. Estimates suggest that around 6,300 people or, 67.2% of those experiencing real unemployment, may not be receiving this support, highlighting the importance of help beyond the benefits system.

Jess Griffiths, The Salvation Army’s Employability Practitioner in Carmarthen said:

“Many of the people we support face real barriers that can make moving forward feel impossible at times. That’s why it’s so powerful to see them build confidence, gain new skills, and become part of a supportive community where they feel valued and encouraged. Employability Day is about celebrating those journeys.”
