Plans for the construction of a dormer extension to the north elevation of a property overlooking Tenby harbour have been approved by local councillors.
Full and listed buildings applications from Mr. Kim Walker, of 39A Cefn Coed Road, Cyncoed, Cardiff, for the construction of a dormer extension to the north elevation of Shore View, 1 Crackwell Street, were given the thumbs up by members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday night.
Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter told her colleagues that she didn’t see a problem with the plans and welcomed them.
However, Clr. Laurence Blackhall said that the only concerns he had with the proposals would be the installation of uPVC windows.
Tenby Civic Society’s planning sub-committee said that they welcomed the care shown for the qualities of the building and its setting, but were seeking clarification on two elements of the design before passing their recommendation.
“We note it is unclear in the application whether specific windows will need replacement or renovation, but we feel both courses should use wooden materials of an appropriate style to the period of the original building,” commented Harry Gardiner from the Civic Society.
“Both elevations are very prominent, and as a ‘listed building’ in a Conservation Area, amongst other listed buildings, to install uPVC windows would be against several policies, so would not be in sympathy with the character of the area.
“The building’s wide, flat roofed ‘dormer’ proposed is not in character with the Victorian style of the building’s rear elevation, and will be a too prominent addition to the prominent skyline (readily seen from the beach below) and has much too lateral a design, with no vertical design elements to break up its width or to echo the low window to wall elevation ratio or window pattern.
“Other similar past applications have benefited from amendments which could better suit the existing building, and provide good light and outlook,” he continued.
Members of Tenby Town Council voted to approve the plans, with their recommendations to be passed on to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority for consideration.
