The Pembrokeshire Swimming Championships took place at Haverfordwest over the weekend of October 11/12. A large and enthusiastic crowd were entertained by some superb swimming from well over a thousand entries and for the fifth year in a row, Pembroke Swimming Club picked up the County Shield as the top performing club.
This is a fantastic achievement considering all the wonderful talented swimmers we have in this county and all the more of a remarkable achievement when Pembroke had many of their top swimmers either away at university or not swimming many events due to forthcoming competitions.
Pembroke had 66 individuals who swam at this year's event and almost every swimmer swam a personal best time.
The following swimmers set new competition best times: 13/14 years Curtis Palmer 100m and 200m backstroke, 9/10 years Charlie Shiels 100m butterfly and 200m breaststroke, 11/12 years Alice Sloan 200m breaststroke, 15/0 Nyle Lewis 200m breaststroke, 15/0 Jonathan Orchard 200m butterfly, 13/14 years Colm Tobin 200m butterfly and freestyle, 8/u Caera Lewis 50m backstroke and breaststroke.
Curtis, Charlie, Colm and Alice were all swimming in out of age so will still be in the same age group for next year's event, so will be expecting to better the times even further.
In total, the Pembroke swimmers recorded 107 medals, which consisted of 33 gold, 43 silver and 31 bronze.
Pembroke as a whole club can take pride in this result, not only did the swimmers perform so well, but the coaches and helpers also showed how professional they are.
Pembroke club is not resting on its laurels, though. Head coach Keith Thompson has started a series of long course (50m pool length) training sessions at the national pool Swansea so the future county swimmers can have long course experience in readiness for long course events.
