Pembroke Power Station demonstrates why we need to equip young people with the right skills for the future, according to Labour candidate for South Pembrokeshire, Delyth Evans. On a visit to the plant, Delyth was shown the state of the art technology used to make the Pembroke plant the most efficient of its kind in Europe.

Delyth said: "We need to make sure school and college-leavers in Pembrokeshire have the right skills to work in key sectors like energy and engineering. The opportunities within these sectors are fantastic. Pembroke Power Station is offering a small number of apprenticeships and if you are lucky enough to get one of these, you never look back. It's the same with Valero and its apprenticeship programme. We need to make sure young people can seize these opportunities."

Delyth said these sectors should no longer be considered as male-only territory.

"Young women and girls should definitely be encouraged to consider careers in the energy sector and in engineering. It is no longer a male dominated field, and it's an incredibly fast-moving area to get into. If you are interested in these subjects, go for it!"

If Labour wins the election in May, it has pledged to introduce a new vocational qualification to encourage teenagers who don't want to go to university to develop their skills through a more technical and practical route than they can at the moment. Delyth Evans says it should be the priority for any government to provide all school leavers with a set of skills they can use to find a decent job
