The first president to be elected for the new Pembroke Ladies Probus Club at the inaugural meeting on January 16 is Sandra Thompson, of Hundleton.
Officers then elected were: vice-president - Monica Vanner; treasurer - Dilys Yea; secretary - Evelyn MacCallum; outings organiser - Dawn Homfray; welcoming and raffle steward - Mai Butterworth; press officer - Daphne Bush.
Elaine Thomas, former lead dancer at the Moulin Rouge, Paris, agreed to be their very interesting and memorable first speaker.
Elaine demonstrated the unique art of 'Can Can' synonymous to the Moulin Rouge, which few people realise, and encouraged willing members to participate.
Elaine's career in dance took her to London, Spain and eventually the Moulin Rouge, the home of the 'Can Can'.
Elaine rose to the top position of lead dancer. Elaine described the skilful dance routines as quite a feat in very heavy costumes, nevertheless glamour had to shine through, with quick changes in the wings between dance themes.
Moulin Rouge dancers practised the 'Can Can' daily and performed the dance nightly at midnight in pink illuminated costumes! As one would imagine, Elaine was a memorable, fascinating and much appreciated first guest for Pembroke Ladies Probus Club, thank you Elaine.
The members are also most grateful to John Blake, 'A Touch Of Wood', Pembroke, for creating their new gavel from locally sourced ash, and wish to announce that their next meeting will be held on February 20, at 11.30 am, at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel, Pembroke Dock. Mr. Michael Howells, former Pembrokeshire coroner, will be guest on that date.
