RNLI Race The club's annual RNLI Challenge Trophy race was staged on Sunday. Entry fees and other profits generated form part of the club's donation to the RNLI made in the autumn. Courses suited to the forecast light weather were set for two divisions of cruising yachts. The courses led mostly upwind to the Angle/Thorn Rock area and there was a good deal of exciting position changing as boats tacked from side to side of the haven. At the windward end, as an extra challenge, our tactics had to include keeping safely clear of the Isle of Inishmore Irish ferry which several of us had visited last week to gain an appreciation of the master's concerns when encountering a racing fleet. Hopefully we put lessons learned into practice, as there were no reprimands from the ship. As it turned out, the wind was higher than expected and the fleet returned downwind to the club finish line quicker than expected and still quite close together, giving the race officer a bit of a shock. The race was followed by a barbeque, so that the day raised some £150 towards the RNLI donation. Results were as follows: Division One - 1. Maelstrom, 2. Maverick, 3. Selukwe, 4. Aloha; Division Two - 1. Leonore, 2. Swansong, 3. Cinnabar, 4. Verglas, 5. Psittakos, 6. Merak. The ship's-wheel trophy is alternately awarded between the divisions so that this year it goes to Leonore.
Upcoming events
The final race and prize-giving for the spring series has been re-scheduled for June 15. As part of the Pembroke Dock bi-centennial on Sunday, August 10, the club will be staging racing close to Hobbs Point which will also be a vantage point for viewing a national rowing race event. The club will be open for refreshments and will be organising stalls on its frontage, including a boat-jumble.
