In a tricky low scoring quiz this week set by the Naval Club, both the contenders for the championship are feeling the pressure and slipped up, which means engraving the trophy will have to wait until after the last round of the series.
Long-time leaders Station A lost for the second week running to the visiting Alma B, who were the week's highest scorers. They won the first two rounds, but the home team managed to stop the rot in round three and pulled back to within striking distance before sharing the spoils in round four. However, the Alma surged into a 10-point lead after round five, and, although the Station took two six-pointers in round six, they could not close the gap and the Alma B deserved the win.
The challengers, Station B, suffered the same sort of match at the Oak and, despite getting to within three points of the home team after round five, they finally lost on the last question.
The Alma A entertained the St. Govan's Inn, with the result ending in their second tie of the series. In the derby match at the Charlton, a close encounter saw the B team coming out on top and a win for them in their last match will see them take third place in the league.
In the final match of the round, Cosh Brewery visited the First & Last in what was the closest contest of the night, just taking the win by a two-point margin.
Next week is the last round of the league and the following week the cup round will be played at the Station in the same format as last year, followed by the trophy presentations, so I hope to see all team members there for hopefully another enjoyable night.
Results for the week were: Alma A 55 St. Govan's Inn 55; Oak 62 Station B 62; First and Last 57 Cosh Brewery 59; Station A 56 Alma B 66 and Charlton B 61 Charlton 54.
Will St. Govan's Inn be the final downfall of the Station A on their travels next week or will Cosh Brewery come back to haunt the Station B? All will fall into place come Sunday.
