What a thrilling climax the final week of the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock LVA Quiz produced, with the outcome of the trophies in doubt until the final questions. The grand finalé was at the Brewery Inn, Cosheston, where the visitors and league leaders, the Station B, needed to avoid defeat against the second-placed Brewery side to become league champions.

The visitors led from the off and after four rounds looked quite comfortable, but the home team slowly reeled them in and the result hung on the final question, with the home team needing a six-pointer to win. Subject, Australia, and up stepped Steve Van Rhyn to take it, pressure on, answer correct, and with it the league title by just one point.

For the losing Station side the agony was not over as they could now be pipped for runners-up spot by the Alma B, the long time league leaders, who coincidently were playing away at the Station A, where another close game was still ongoing on their return.

Here the home side had led throughout, albeit by as little as one point at times, but by the last question the game was just out of the Alma B's grasp, losing by seven points and giving the runners-up spot to the Station B.

Elsewhere, equally tight clashes were going on and another last question win occurred at the Naval Club, where the home side beat the visiting First and Last by just two points. At the Charlton, the A side entertained the Oak and came out winners by just three points, while at St. Govan's, the home team beat the visiting Con Club by six points, so in the six games on the night, seven points was the maximum that separated the competing teams.

With next week being the bank holiday the LVA Quiz Cup will be played for at the Station Inn the following week, Sunday, May 13, and not the 14th - an error on the fixture list - followed by the trophy presentation to the winners and runners-up of both league and cup.

Finally, congratulations to Cosh Brewery as champions, thanks to all who have taken part in the quiz, especially those who have asked the questions and I look forward to seeing all the teams for the cup and presentation night.

The week's results in full were: Station A 71 Alma B 64; Cosh Brewery 74 Station B 73; Alma A 60 Charlton B 66; Naval Club 71 First and Last 69; St. Govan's 63 Con Club 57 and Charlton A 61 Oak 58.
