Staff from two Pembrokeshire opticians will be lacing up their trainers and putting their best foot forward in aid of Velindre Cancer Care this month.

The Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest Specsavers stores will take part in a team race on Sunday, October 26, which will see staff walk between the respective stores, a total distance of around 10 miles. Staff from the Pembroke Dock store will be walking to the Haverfordwest store and vice versa.

Gary Owen, director of Specsavers, Pembroke Dock, said: "The staff are really looking forward to a bit of competitive fun between ourselves and the team at the Haverfordwest store. Walking a distance of 10 miles is certainly not something to be taken lightly and I am very proud at both teams for taking on such a challenge.

"Whilst there will be no specific prize for the store who completes the race in the quickest time, knowing that we all will have contributed to raising as much money as possible for Velindre will make it all worthwhile."

In addition to the race, the Pembroke Dock store will be hosting a coffee morning today (Friday). All staff will be dressed in pink on the day and the store will be fully decked out in the colour associated with Breast Cancer Awareness month. Staff will also be selling tea, coffee, cookies and Welsh cakes, with all proceeds raised going towards the store's overall fundraising total.

Throughout the month, the store will be selling handmade breast cancer broaches for a small donation to the charity, these have been made by one of the store's optical assistants, Lucy Swindlehurst with some help from her grandma. Staff will also be offering free of charge glasses repairs for anyone who would like to avail of this service. They would just request that a small donation is made to the Velindre Breast Cancer charity.

Velindre Cancer Centre is Specsavers' national charity of the year in Wales for the second year running. It has been providing specialist cancer care, treatment and support services to patients and families across Wales for more than 50 years. It is Wales' largest non-surgical cancer hospital and currently treats over 130,000 outpatients and day cases every year.

Mr. Owen added: "We are very proud to support Velindre again this year and aim to raise as much as we can to help them continue the incredible work they do. Dealing with cancer is one of the biggest challenges anyone can face. It is a disease that unfortunately affects so many of, making Velindre's work in communities all across Wales even more valuable."

To make a donation to the charity, you can call into the Pembroke Dock store and pledge a donation or sponsor the walking team.
