MR. B. PHILLIPS

PEMBROKE

Former chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Mr. Bryan Phillips, died suddenly at his Pembroke home on November 22 at the age of 87.

He was also four times Mayor of Pembroke and, with his sudden passing, Pembrokeshire and his home town have lost a lifelong champion.

Mr. Phillips was a proud man of Pembroke and a Freeman of the town. He was the eldest son of the four children of Frederick Warren Phillips (a former county councillor) and Eva May Phillips (nee Lewis), of Military Road, Pennar, Pembroke Dock.

In his early years, he was an active and popular player in the Pembroke Dock Harlequins Rugby Club. A colleague recalls Bryan once turning up on horseback for a match at the London Road ground; the horse was left in charge of the linesman during the match, after which Bryan re-mounted his horse and headed back up the hill to Pennar.

Bryan first worked on the family farm in Pennar and later he became a successful house builder in the south of the county. He married Marion Thomas, of Llanelli, a teacher at Pennar Junior School, in 1964, and they made their home firstly in Military Road, Pennar, and later moved to Pembroke, where they bravely coped with the sad death of their infant child, Huw David. They went on to enjoy many years of happiness in the Pembroke community.

Bryan followed the family tradition of involvement in local government. His grandfather, William Phillips, was Mayor of Pembroke in 1904 and his uncle William, stationmaster at Pembroke Dock, was Mayor in 1944. Bryan had the distinction in 1979-1980 of being the 600th Mayor of Pembroke.

Pembroke then included the former Royal Dockyard town and his election brought messages of congratulations from the Commander-in-Chief Fleet and from the Royal Navy, including one from HMS Pembroke, then the RN training establishment at Chatham.

Loyally supported by Marion as his Mayoress, Bryan was Mayor again in 1989-1990, 1990-1991 and 1997-1998. He also followed his father onto Pembrokeshire County Council and he became chairman of the council in 1999-2000.

In later years, he enjoyed the warm fellowship and support of friends in the Pembroke Probus Club, of which he had been a committee member. His long service to Pembroke was rewarded by his election in 1998 as a Burgess of the Gild (not Guild, by local observance) of Freemen of Pembroke.

He attended the annual Gild Service at St. Mary’s Church, Pembroke, two days before he died. His brother, David, died in 1972 and his sister, Joyce (Baldwin), of Pembroke, died in 2014. He is survived by his youngest brother, Lawrence, nieces Jayne, Justine and Victoria, nephew Robin, and Bethan and Lynn, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law.

The funeral, to be conducted by the Rev. Canon Roger Jones, will be held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Thursday, December 8, at 10.45 am.

There will be family flowers only. Donations in memory of Bryan may be made to Tenovus Cancer Care, a charity he admired and supported, c/o John Roberts and Son, Undertakers, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

Mr. D. Kemp

Kilgetty

The funeral took place on Monday, November 28, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, of Dennis Kemp.

Dennis was born on Monday, March 18, 1946. His parents were Irene and Ray Kemp and Dennis was to be one of eight children; having four sisters and three brothers. The family lived in Horsham and from a young age Dennis was always very close to his mother and also protective of his sisters, there for them whenever they needed him. Throughout his life, family was always very important to Dennis.

After school, Dennis joined the merchant navy and travelled the world. When back in the UK, he stayed with his mother. Leaving the Merchant Navy, Dennis met Phyllis, a local artist, their relationship developed and they lived in Brighton. Dennis was now working as a landscape gardener and also worked as a steward on Brighton Pier. Dennis had lots of good friends in Brighton during this time, including his best mate ‘Pip’. He would like nothing more after a day’s work than to meet them in the evenings for a beer or two. His main hobby was fishing which he enjoyed throughout the years.

After Phyllis died, Dennis moved back in with his mother in Stenning near Worthing. He stayed in Stenning after his mother died before moving to Pembrokeshire with his sister, Sue. At first, they even stayed temporarily in a tent in Manorbier whilst looking for somewhere to live permanently.

Dennis really loved Pembrokeshire and in the following years he was to live in a number of properties in Tenby. By now his diabetes and arthritis had caught up with him, although he still managed to do a bit of fishing. Being good company, he soon built up a large number of friends. Amongst them was Dean, who was an exceptionally good mate to him during this time. People who knew Dennis knew his ways and would soon discover how stubborn he could be - if he didn’t want to do it, then there was no way he was going to do it!

Moving to Hill Rise in Kilgetty, Dennis’s pride and joy was his garden and he would always be out there working. However, as his health worsened and his balance problems increased, Dennis had a fall which really knocked the stuffing out of him. He no longer felt confident enough to be out in his garden and now chose to live a quieter life. Much of his time was now spent indoors watching TV. He loved watching wrestling whether it was Worldwide Wrestling Federation or old black and white coverage. He also enjoyed classic comedy shows such as Only Fools and Horses. Whenever Sue and Andy called to visit him, it would always be the wrestling or the comedy shows on the television.

He was very supportive of Sue and Andy and enjoyed visiting their cattery. He was particularly keen to help them with starting to keep geese, chickens and ducks.

In the last couple of years, life was much more difficult for Dennis and he was in and out of hospital, and when home, he would eventually be having visits from carers, four times a day.

After being in Glangwili Hospital for some time, Dennis returned to the Tenby Cottage Hospital Ward at Park House. It is some comfort to know that Dennis really liked Park House and felt very comfortable there. He was also still very mentally alert, asking Sue about how the birds were getting on.

Sadly, Dennis slipped out of time on November 14. The family would particularly wish to thank the hospital, carers and Park House for the care shown to Dennis.

The funeral was conducted by Mike Ashbridge and the music at the funeral was Alleluia by Alexandra Burke, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling by The Irish Folk Band, Danny Boy by Foster and Allen and Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkel.

There were family flowers only, with donations made payable to Greenacres Animal Rescue, c/o funeral directors, Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, or Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
