On February 11, 1949, at a public meeting in St.Mary's Schoolroom, Pembroke, the late Mrs. Basil Ramsden, mother of Major Ramsden, of Cosheston, founded the Pembroke fund-raising branch of the RNLI, later to be known as Pembroke Ladies Lifeboat Guild.

Mrs. Ramsden, was elected to be the first president, together with vice-presidents, the late Mrs. W. Wynne (a great aunt of our current president, Rosie Allen-Mirehouse) and Mrs. Wilcox. The elected honorary secretary, was the late Mrs. J. A. Roch and honorary treasurer, the late Mrs. R. E. Jones. The first five members were the late Mrs. Beer, Miss B. Bevan, Miss Thomson, Miss H. Williams and Mrs. Wrench.

The first committee meeting was held October 14, 1949, at 33 Main Street, Pembroke, now the business premises of Mr. Guy Thomas. Did you know that Guy?

Mrs. R. E. Jones was elected chairman and the ladies immediately started organising their first Flag Day. Mrs. Wrench chose to organise a dance with the help of the late Mrs. Mendus and Mrs. Woodhouse. At this early stage, it was decided to encourage more members, namely the late Mrs. Hayes, Mrs. Mendus, Mrs. Dawkins and Mrs. Rusell.

This pattern has continued over the years until the present day. It is a huge honour to relate this part of our history as the present chair of Pembroke Ladies Lifeboat Guild and to follow in the footsteps of some iconic local RNLI stalwarts.

The Guild's gratitude must go to the Ramsden family of Cosheston for supporting the Guild for the last 65years, an incredible record. Mrs. Carola Ramsden holding office of president for 30 years and her daughter-in- law Ira, supported by husband David, has belonged for the last 14 years.

We should also like to express our gratitude to our supporters in the Pembroke locality for your continuing loyal support.

On March 31 until April 1 next, the Guild ladies will be undertaking the annual national RNLI house to house collection. We should be most grateful if you could volunteer your help for a few hours during this period. Please contact Daphne on 01646 681437, Norma on 01646 687412 or Penny on 01646 680453 in the evenings to offer your help. We look forward to meeting you.
