The organisers of the Carten100 Cardiff to Tenby charity cycle ride are hopeful that the event will take place this year, despite another pandemic postponement.
Normally taking place in May, a new date has been set for September due to ongoing uncertainties over sporting events taking place during the Covid-19 crisis.
The popular event which sees thousands of riders take on the journey from the Welsh capital to the seaside resort, was cancelled completely last year due to the pandemic.
“We are frustrated to have to announce the postponement again of the Carten100 - we have been in discussions with our partners and relevant authorities and following the updated information provided from the Welsh Assembly Government, we will be unable to run an event of the scale of the Carten100 on the scheduled date of May 8,” said a spokesperson.
“Having to re-schedule a third time is not something we ever would have expected, but for everyone’s safety, riders, volunteers, supporters and the general public this is the only decision we can make. We are not alone, other cycling and sporting events planned up to the summer have either cancelled or postponed until 2022.
“We are fortunate that Carten100 has such goodwill with the local authorities, charities, support teams and volunteers that we have been wholly supported in our decision to run event later this year rather than wait for 2022. We have therefore decided to try again, to get the Carten100 2020 away in September 2021.
“Looking ahead, the path out of the lockdown for the UK and Wales is starting to look promising and we feel reasonably confident we can run the event in some form on Saturday, September 18, 2021. Hopefully by then Tenby will have all types of accommodation open as well as pubs, cafes and restaurants.
“Carten100 2020(21) may not be as we know it, but we will do our best to make it happen!” they added.
For 2020 entrants, all entries will be transferred to the new date. Anyone who cannot make the rescheduled date, can still apply for a refund (less the admin fee) by contacting the organisers via email at: [email protected]
