Sir,
Could I please address a number of issues raised in a recently published letter in the Observer headed Concern over new English medium primary school?
The letter was riddled with inaccuracies and mistaken assumptions which cannot go unchallenged.
Error one: “There have been numerous site meetings because of problems, but no mention to the general public!”
Fact: There have been no specific site meetings because of problems, just routine monthly site meetings with the contractor. Therefore there has been no need for a public announcement.
Error two: “There are grave concerns over the new build, firstly lack of play areas.”
Fact: All play areas meet required standards.
Error three: “Secondly, I have heard that the building is already £800k over budget.”
Fact: The project is within budget which has been approved by the Welsh Government and Pembrokeshire County Council.
Error four: “I’m surprised that Tenby Town Council hasn’t been monitoring this new development, making sure that if we have to have it, it should be up to standard’.”
Fact: Tenby Town Council is not the client for the project and has no remit or role for decision-making or for monitoring the project. In terms of ‘standard,’ what is being provided is a 21st century school.
Error five: “Now they (English-speaking pupils) also end up with a building not fit for purpose.”
Fact: The English school accommodation has been designed to the latest standards and provides for a learning environment that meets all space requirements. It will provide a 21st century learning environment to all pupils.
Error six: “The saddest part of all this waste of money is the demolishment of the infants school....”
Fact: The demolition of the infants school is a condition of planning approval. More importantly, the overall suitability of the school for teaching has been classed as ‘poor’ with teaching methods being inhibited due to the existing accommodation of the school.
