Pembroke and District Male Vouce Choir give concerts in all manner of venues totally unsuited physically to accommodate a 35-plus strong male voice choir where, shall we say, many are of ample build? The choir marshall must shoe horn them in as best he can, with personal hygiene an important consideration! Angle Church is just one more example of that kind. Understandable naturally, the original builders could not have imagined an event of this nature several centuries ago taking place in their creation. Built for a different age truly. But was this of concern to the choir? Not at all! They have squeezed themselves into tighter corners than that provided by Angle over their time; Bosherston Church comes to mind here. And it's not just the choir who can be inconvenienced. The poor accompanist, (Jenny Griffiths in P&DMVC's case), has to suffer unsuitable environs too. Resolute and unfazed she has to be oft times. The accommodation difficulties in Angle, though, were negated completely by the welcome they received. Overwhelming is not overstating the case. Whistles and cheers at the conclusion of items, and no, they were not catcalls, thank you. Genuine, heartfelt appreciation! And it makes such a difference to a choir who after all sing simply in order to raise money for community good causes, and by the way, pay all their own expenses in that process. But they are happy to do it! They welcome new members, too, so give it a try, why not? One espied John Mirehouse present, Phil Thompson, Lorna Rees and all her crew who do so much for the church, plus a number of other very familiar and welcome faces of times past, to this scribe at least. And once again visitors were present from the Land of Oz, totally convinced it was worth the journey to come to listen to P&DMVC! The choir also welcomed back for an all too brief star appearance, Tom Evans, baby of the choir, him of the hair! Back from Russia but soon to scoot off to London, matters of the heart we believe involved. The (still) voiceless conductor Chris Lloyd galvanised as usual, but her husband normally has enough to say for both of them, many might suggest. Phil Lloyd that is, on his usual excellent amusing presentational form. Excellent acoustics in the church were a bonus for choir and audience in a varied and eclectic programme. The soloists gave of their best too, Owen Jones 'I'se Weary of Waiting', Joan Lewis with another gem 'Beside Still Waters'. Expression and interpretation is everything to this lady and she certainly made the most of her talents with this item. Later in the concert, Alyson Griffiths played a fine 'Cavatina', with Sam Thomas following up with a powerful 'Lucky Old Sun' that went down very well The Rev. Geoffrey Howell officiated, a blessing to start, praise at the interval and prayers at the end, then even more praise! Phil Lloyd was able to announce that two members of the choir were beneficiaries in the recent honours list. BEMs for Frank Harries for his charity work, John Evans for his work with PDHistorical Preservation Society, father of the aforesaid Tom you know? Audience offered congratulations with prolonged applause. And what of P&DMVC's performance? Well, it was obvious the choir gained more than a little inspiration from audience response, which was truly motivating on the night. All public performers seek this of course and when present it lights up any event, and so it was here. The medley of WWI songs lit up the place like a flash too (no pun intended!), but every item received true appreciation and sufficient to say that at concert's conclusion the audience rose spontaneously to demand more. Denial was not an option and conductor and choir complied happily enough. At concert's end everyone congregated in the Village Hall for the essential cuppa, the socialising, and the superb light refreshments kindly provided. Tony Ward in his usual quiet and modest way espoused thanks for that bounty. Stop press: With regret, the concert by P&DMVC at Pembroke Town Hall scheduled for today (Friday) has been cancelled.
