The organisers of an annual Cardiff to Tenby charity cycle ride have cancelled the popular event for this year - stating ‘if the Olympics can be held a year late - then the 2020 Carten 100 can too!’
Normally taking place in May, a new date had been set for next month, following the lockdown, but the charity event organisers have now conceded that this will not be achievable.
“We have tried, looked at all the options and asked all the parties involved but we must concede that we are not going to be able to hold the already postponed 2020 Carten 100 on September 19.” said a spokesperson for the event, which normally draws thousands of riders, who set off from Cardiff, and finish through Tenby’s Tudor Square.
“Looking at the rate of change in the easing of the Covid-19 rules in Wales and the localised lockdowns happening around the UK, we cannot be sure the ride would have any chance of happening and we want to give you all a decision as we get close to ride day.
“Welsh Cycling have announced that no non-competitive events will be sanctioned before the end of August, so larger rides will most likely not be permitted for a few months more.
Currently only 30 riders are allowed to congregate at one place and that number is unlikely to change much in the next six weeks. With a start, feed stations and a finish there would be no way to keep numbers anywhere down to those levels with the 2000+ riders that we have on the Carten 100. As we cannot comply with the current rules, we cannot get insurance for the ride and riders so we cannot even try to proceed.
“The team are all desperately disappointed but would like to thank Welsh Cycling, The Welsh Assembly Government, local councils on our route and our supporters for the help they have given us,” they continued.
All riders’ entries will be carried forward to 2021, with the ride scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 8.
