Pupils from Classes 4 and 9 of Golden Grove School -Ysgol Gelli Aur have been studying a theme of Grand Designs. With none grander than the cathedral of our Patron Saint, St. David, it was an opportunity not to be missed when our very own clergyman, Rev. Roger Jones, invited pupils to see the impressive building for themselves. For many, this was the first time they had travelled to the north of the county and they certainly enjoyed the sights on the way.

On arriving at St. David's, there was an audible gasp as they walked down towards the cathedral. Descending the steps and pathway, the pupils were met with a cheery smile by Rev. Jones. He started off his tour with a quiz about the building. What could the pupils see? Were all parts of the building the same? Was it leaning? The latter point gave rise to a resounding 'yes.' However, Rev. Jones explained that it was perfectly safe and was not going to fall down around them - hopefully!

There then started a tour of the building during which Rev. Jones pointed out the detail of the stone work, the beauty of the stained glass windows and the intricate wood carvings and ceiling painting, all of which made the building the 'Grandest of Designs.'

Fascinating stories and connections explained with the long history of Wales were told and shared. Rev. Jones explained the religious significance of the building an how it is used today for service, celebrations and concerts. It was, he said, quite ok to have a bit of fun there too. With this, he produced a coin or two from his pocket and set them rolling down the sloping floors. There was much cheering as the coins went further and further each time. All parts of the building were explored and marvelled at, but it was soon time to retire for lunch before setting off back to Pembroke, not however before the pupils thanked Rev. Jones for his fascinating insight in to St. David's Cathedral, so grandly designed.

Headteacher Les Jonson said: " We have a long association with St. David's Cathedral and we are most grateful to Rev. Jones for his invitation to visit. I know that the pupils found it and enjoyable and interesting educational visit."
