Twenty-six new 'workers' were enrolled at Carew Castle last week with the arrival of a bus from Golden Grove School! Mistress Kate took on the pupils to undertake tasks related to the daily running of the household. Splitting them in to groups the pupils were put under the tutelage of a mason, a cook and a scribe to learn about the tasks they were to perform. Master Thomas, the head mason, soon had the new employees helping to build part of a new wall. He pointed out the hard limestone rocks for the main walls and the very much softer Bath Stone for lintels and heraldic shields. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, a group were learning how to plat bread and make pottage, a vegetable filling, the activity and the wonderful aromas attracting other visitors to the castle. In another room, a group could be found writing letters of somewhat different alphabet. After a couple of hours of hard graft, the pupils were finally allowed some time to play and relax using quoits, cup and ball and juggling balls. The visit to Carew Castle was planned by class teacher Miss Watton as a part of the term theme of Grand Designs. The visit focused on the history and daily life of the castle residents and was much enjoyed. The staff of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, under whose guardianship the castle is kept, did a fantastic job of bringing alive the Tudor period. Pupils enjoyed a packed lunch in the castle grounds with the wonderful views over the river before taking a visit to the tidal mill. Miss Watton said: "We all had a great time and the pupils gained a valuable insight to their heritage, they were however glad to return to the modern day!"
