Over the past few weeks, pupils from Golden Grove School-Ysgol Gelli Aur in Pembroke  have been engaged in athletic field events and heats for track events. The culmination of the activity was a very busy sports day held on June 24. Parental support was evident from the size of the spectator crowd cheering on their sons and daughters as the school houses of Swans, Cormorants and Herons competed against each other in running races, egg and spoon and an obstacle course. Sprinting down the track in front of the gathered parents and families, the pupils did battle, the points already earned from the previously held field events being added to the tally board. All three houses were close at the start and the secession of races and events saw the lead change several times. The houses members gathered under the shelter of gazebos, cheered and roared at their team members giving encouragement and praise.   One of the highlights of the afternoon was the Year 6 egg and spoon race which saw PCSO Carla Thomas take the field in full uniform to compete against the pupils. Several drops were recovered before she finally crossed the line behind her fellow competitors, gracefully acknowledging their better technique! The final points tally saw Swans house winning,  a delighted Jarvis and Ffion received the winners cup from Mr. Phil Bradden. Headteacher Les Johnson was commentator and MC for the event which was blessed by good weather. He said: "We have a long tradition of sports days in school, the events are always supported and I thank the pupils for the spirit they showed in the competitions." Mr. Johnson also paid tribute to the parents attending and the friends of Golden Grove who put on light refreshments.  The Foundation Phase sports day will be held on Tuesday, July 8, (weather permitting).  In other news, the school has recently had a very informative visit from RNLI beach lifeguards. Taking the pupils through tips on being safe and having fun on Pembrokeshire's beaches, they explained the purpose and meaning of various flags displayed at the water's edge. The lifeguards pointed out the various beach safer rules  including: when on a lifeguarded beach, find the red and yellow flags and always swim or bodyboard between them - this area is patrolled by lifeguards; never swim alone. They held a quick quiz to review the learning session.  The sessions were much enjoyed by the pupils and some vital lessons were learned. The school expresses its thanks the RNLI beach lifeguards for the time given at the school and for all the work they do in support of keeping our Pembrokeshire beaches safe.
