Sir,

I write with total disbelief that the councillors of this beautiful town and those of PCC are still, a decade after issues were first raised, finding themselves DISCUSSING the problems that street traders cause within the town.

I’ve highlighted discussing because that is literally all they have done on this topic.

The latest issue being that one of the traders refused to move his cart to allow an emergency vehicle through. It’s a classic case of give these opportunists an inch and they will take the proverbial mile.

This beautiful town recently underwent a long and challenging enhancement scheme within Tudor Square, a square that lies beneath a breathtaking church and one that was worthy of such a makeover. So why on earth is our town council allowing it to be littered and spoilt by half a dozen tacky, ugly stalls peppered all over the square.

It seems that the traders are exploiting a legal loophole, the same loophole which both Tenby Town Council and Pembs. council have been unable to unloop for the best part of a decade, and although a lot of pointless discussions have taken place, I am not sure an ounce of legal advice has been taken.

I suggest they take a leaf from Brussels or the Houses of Parliament and simply create a new bylaw which would then allow them, the council, to decide and enforce matters and not the street trader, take back control of your town before its too late.

On a recent evening walk through the town, I watched one of the traders load three of his carts onto his HGV which he had conveniently parked half on the pavement in Tudor Square for three hours, again a classic case of the proverbial ‘mile.’ This isn’t an individual selling a few wares for a couple of quid, this is a full-blown enterprise laughing in the face of Tenby Town Council.

Tourists come from all over the world to visit this stunning town with its Blue Flag beaches and colourful buildings festooned in flowers in season. Come on councillors, open your eyes and look what an appaling spectacle these traders are creating.

I challenge you to answer why Padstow and St. Ives are not encountering such problems. Maybe it’s because they have taken the issue past the DISCUSSION stage.
