AS energy costs continue to rise, Welsh homeowners can already access government-backed finance for solar panels and other energy-saving home improvements, while similar support in England has yet to be introduced.
Equivalent support in England is expected under the UK Government's Warm Homes Plan, announced in January 2026. The proposals include low-interest or interest-free loans to help households invest in renewable energy technologies such as solar panels, heat pumps and battery storage. However, the scheme has yet to launch in England.
In Wales, support is already available through schemes such as Green Homes Wales and Nest Warm Homes.
While many energy-efficiency schemes are aimed at lower-income households or those receiving benefits, Green Homes Wales is available to a much broader range of homeowners. The scheme offers interest-free loans and retrofit support, with more than £5 million in additional funding confirmed for 2026–27.
The availability of funding comes as energy bills are set to rise again. Ofgem has confirmed a 13 per cent increase in the energy price cap from July, adding £221 to the average annual bill.
Ian Mach, Director of Swansea-based Ulex Energy, said:
“With energy bills rising again, now is a good time for homeowners to consider whether solar could work for them. Many people are unaware that funding is available beyond lower-income households, particularly through schemes such as Green Homes Wales. Meanwhile, equivalent proposals in England have yet to be launched.”
Homeowners can also take advantage of 0% VAT on qualifying energy-saving installations, including solar panels and battery storage, but only until March 2027.
As energy prices continue to climb, improving energy efficiency and generating electricity at home could help households reduce their long-term energy costs.
Ulex Energy provides solar and battery storage solutions across South Wales and was recently named a finalist in the Wales Energy Efficiency Awards 2026.
