PEMBROKE’S town walls have stood for centuries, but they need the right care to stay standing.

Built with traditional lime mortar, these walls are designed to ‘breathe’, allowing moisture to escape and protecting the stone over time.

Regular checks can make all the difference. Pembroke Town Walls Trust advise looking out for crumbling mortar or stone, cracks or bulging, and loose or missing coping stones.

“Not all repairs help,” they warn. “The wrong materials, cleaning, or removing ivy without care can actually cause damage.” And some walls are protected, so consent may be needed before any work.

So if you’re unsure, always seek advice from a heritage specialist, SPAB, or get in touch with the Trust ([email protected]).
