Tenby Food Hub

The Tenby Food Hub is designed to improve all our access to fresh and reasonably priced food. The Old Chapel in Lower Frog Street has agreed to host it, Planed has organised it, and Four Seasons has agreed to supply the fruit, vegetables and salad. Now we just need you to order some.

You can choose from all or any combination of a mixed bag of vegetables, a mixed bag of salad and a mixed bag of fruit. Each costs £5 and you get a mixture of the best deal that Four Seasons can get for us on the day. You need to put your order and the cash to pay for it in to the Old Chapel by next Tuesday, August 16 for delivery on Friday, August 26. Volunteers will be at the Old Chapel that day to organise the delivery and make sure everyone has what they ordered. You can pick your order up any time from 11am to 4pm on the Friday or 10am to 4pm on Saturday, August 26. You can put in another order for the following fortnight while you are there! Please support this scheme, as the more people that do, the better the benefits for everyone.

World Elephant Day

Today, Friday, August 12, is World Elephant Day. What do you love about elephants? Their intelligence, empathy and caring for one another are just a few of their qualities. You could do worse than embrace these qualities and live them in your own life. The world’s elephants are in trouble – about 100 are killed every day for ivory, meat or body parts. Elephants are a keystone species. It means they create and maintain the ecosystems in which they live and make it possible for a myriad of plant and animal species to live in those environments as well.

You can do some fun elephant craft activities using paper plates for their faces. There are some great elephant books to look out for too, such as Barbar, or Horton, or Dumbo. Which is your favourite? I always loved Barbar myself, and on rereading one recently, I found I still do!

August Wellbeing Tips

This month is a good time to get outside if you can, and maybe do some painting or drawing, without worrying about how good it is – just enjoy doing it and let yourself relax. Maybe listen to some music, or go for a walk, or go paddling. The night of the August 12 to 13 is the best time to see the Perseid Meteor shower. Head out when it gets dark and watch the sky... if it is a clear night it should be quite a show!

Pakistan and India Independence Days

Pakistan and India’s Independence Days are on Sunday, August 14 and Monday, August 15 .This is a good time to have an Indian meal – the meals that we get from Indian takeaways actually come from several parts of India and Pakistan – and some dishes aren’t found there at all, they are British inventions! The national colours for Pakistan are green and white so pompoms or tissue paper flowers or bunting are great to do if you are going to have a celebratory meal. Indian colours are orange, green and white. In some places in India, kite flying is popular on Independence Day, so this is a good activity for this day if there is a bit of wind. The independence days mark the days that India and Pakistan gained independence from the United Kingdom, with much turmoil. Finding out about this would be an interesting project, and it is an interesting part of the world to find out about too.

Tenby Bear’s Picnic

A Teddy Bear’s Picnic will be held in the Edible Community Garden on Sunday, August 21 from 11am. Everyone is welcome; please come with a teddy bear and some food to share. If you no longer have a teddy bear, perhaps you can find one to borrow! Hot or cold drinks will be provided, depending on the weather. Teddy bear competitions and games are being planned. Please bring along any bunting you may have to decorate the garden.

This event is being held to celebrate the garden having been awarded the Community Green Flag Award. The Mayor will be coming to unveil the plaque.

Poetry in the Park

Poetry in the Park is also on Sunday, August 21 at 3pm, but for a change this month will be at the bandstand on Castle Hill. Everyone is welcome!

Keep Wales Tidy Package

The Community Edible Garden has also been allotted a Local Places for Nature Starter Package which will include everything needed to grow fruit and herbs. Keep Wales Tidy has carefully selected everything needed to get started including fruiting shrubs, climbing plants, wild herbs, strawberry plants, edible flowers, hanging baskets, tools and raised beds, trellises, bird boxes and a bug box. They have ensured that all plants are grown in Wales and other items are sourced within the UK. Along with the materials needed to create the garden, Keep Wales Tidy will also spend a day helping us to install the package. Watch this space to see when it is arriving; lots of help will be needed!
