Every year some brave adults dare to return to English or Maths GCSE classes with Learning Pembrokeshire and try to get the grade that eluded them in school. For some, their first attempt may have been some considerable number of years ago (when it was still O-levels in many cases!).
The first thing Learning Pembrokeshire would like to do is to congratulate everybody who took the challenge and endured several gruelling GCSE papers, regardless of results! The course is condensed to one year, so there is quite a lot of pressure to work hard and remain calm.
Those who didn’t gain a Grade C or above, have in many cases, gained insight into what their children are facing at school and will be better equipped to provide support and guidance to them.
English Language learners who took the Higher Tier paper did particularly well this year, with everybody gaining Grade C or above. Lloyd Davies attained a Grade A, while Jessica Anne Taylor, an LSA from Hakin, achieved an A* Grade in English language and a Grade B in Maths. Jessica will now be able to achieve her dream of training to be a teacher.
Half of all the Maths candidates were successful in gaining a grade C or above in Higher Tier Maths. In fact, the majority of these gained that all-important Grade B, so well done everybody.
Thanks should also go to the English and Maths tutors, respectively, Jo Kelleher and John Powell. I know that they have motivated and inspired many of the learners.
If you are interested in attending a GCSE course this year, please contact your local Community Adult Learning Centre: Tenby - 01437 770190, Pembroke Dock - 01437 770170. Many people find that successfully gaining a GCSE in Maths or English can open the door to new employment or educational opportunities.
Anybody who finds formal exams very stressful may be interested in trying an ESW portfolio with Learning Pembrokeshire’s Essential Skills service. Currently, a level 2 Essential Skills Wales portfolio in Application of Number or Communication is equivalent to a Grade C in Maths or English GCSE.
