IS your child in School Year 3 or 4? This January, the Torch Youth Theatre is throwing open its doors for the Spring Term, and the team at the Milford Haven theatre is on the lookout for new members to join its youngest cohort.

You may have seen recent hit productions such as The Bangers and Chips Explosion, Ravers and The Wind in the Willows. But Torch Youth Theatre is not just about performing, as Tim Howe, who leads the program, explained:

“Our sessions help young people build their confidence in a safe, supportive space. We support the development of social skills by making new friends and learning to work as a team. As well as encouraging our members to use their imagination to tackle creative challenges. Most importantly, every session is packed with energy and laughter!”

The sessions for the youngest age group run on Tuesday evenings from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Tim added: “It is the ideal after-school activity for all sorts of young people. Whether they are a born performer, a little bit shy, or just looking to try something new, there is a place for them here.”

While the younger groups build their skills, the Youth Theatre’s oldest group is beginning rehearsals for their upcoming play, Sycamore Gap (sponsored by the Pembrokeshire National Park Authority), as part of the National Theatre’s UK-wide Connections program.

“The National Theatre Connections production is just one performance opportunity we provide,” says Tim. “Throughout their time with us, young people can take part in everything from voiceover work for our Pantomime to termly informal showcases and our spectacular annual summer productions. Torch Youth Theatre is a vital part of our yearly programme of live theatre.”

But what do the young people think about the Torch Youth Theatre?

“Going to Torch Youth Theatre is my favourite part of the week. It is funny, welcoming, and a little space away from the world which invites you to let go and be free,” said one enthusiast. Another said: “Torch means a lot to us and it has helped us create bonds and gives us opportunities we never would have had otherwise.”

Groups meet weekly with school years 3 and 4 meeting on Tuesday between 4.30pm and 6pm; school years 5 and 6 meet on Wednesdays between 4.30pm and 6pm; school years 7, 8, and 9 meet on Tuesdays between 6.30pm and 8pm, while school years 10, 11, 12 and 13 meet on Wednesdays between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

The Torch looks forward to welcoming a whole new generation of young theatre makers through its doors in 2026. The Spring Term runs from January 6/7 to March 24/25.
