Plans for the dredging of Tenby Harbour are now in place, with machines due to be on site for sand removal this month.

“Natural Resources Wales have been given the contractors details and are happy for us to start, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency office in Milford are also aware of the works,” stated Tenby harbourmaster Chris Salisbury, who has also warned members of the public to stay clear of the operating area whilst the dredging works takes place, starting on on Monday, March 18.

Members of Tenby Town Council and the Tenby Harbour Users Association met with representatives of Pembrokeshire County Council last year to inform the authority that urgent dredging options were required for the resort, as high levels of sandbanks that had formed, were causing disruption to boats entering the area.

Councillors pointed out that there was a real concern about the high level of sand sweeping towards Goscar rock across the North Beach, leaving high sandbanks around a section of the harbour’s pier, making it difficult for boats to get back into the harbour.

“Because the harbour has not been dredged in some time, at the current rate, we will have a new beach behind the harbour wall!” said Clr. Laurence Blackhall at the time.
