Young and old enjoyed an evening of ice cream, fun, food and frolics as 750 ‘ducks’ took to the water at Cresswell Quay for Narberth and Whitland Rotary’s annual Duck Race and Pig Roast.

The tide was low when the sun dipped down beyond the horizon, leaving the mudflats and salt marsh, usually an ideal habitat for wading birds and wildfowl, clearly visible. Nevertheless, after a 30 minute delay to the start of the race, 750 numbered ducks (plastic they were!) were encouraged to enter the slowly rising Cresswell River.
The winners were : 1st place, Kathryn Messenger, a visitor down from north of England (and still at the Quay for the finish), 2nd prize was Arthur Towns, all the way from America, and 3rd was Narberth and Whitland Rotarian David Haward. Thanks go to the Kayakers who collected the ducks in the setting sun once the winners had been declared.

Pork roast was enjoyed thanks to Jon James & son butchers and a varied platter of vegetarian fayre was also served, washed down by the ales served by the staff at Cresselly Arms.

Jack Castle provided the music, treating everyone to a virtuoso performance of guitar playing culminating in a truly spectacular rendition of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb.
The RNLI attended; there wasn't enough water to float a boat; however, they raised £140 from their stall and met new supporters too, which is “priceless!” they said. Well done, Daphne!
